Co-working Space @ Kaki Bukit Industrial Estate

Chameleon gains its name from the reptile, which changes its color to blend into the environment. In the same way, the site of Kaki Bukit industrial estate requires the same qualities to thrive.
The Kaki Bukit of the future envisions a harmonious relationship between the two main communities living in the area, namely the foreign workers and residents. Presently, there exists a clear social divide between the two, as the architecture and urban environment of each differs vastly from the other.
As such, it is important to adapt and change as required to maintain or even reconcile these two social groups, allowing them to collide in a gradual and harmonious way. Formed by simple construction methods of a steel structure and 3D printed modules fitted in, it is easy to envision how this building can shift and morph easily over time as needed by its users.
The different elements incorporated also alter one’s movement and experience of the same volume of space, be it physical or mental thresholds. These allow for the gradual and comfortable transition into different spaces where the two groups may collide, giving them ample time to prepare themselves for the interactions that would take place.
Inspired by the back-alleys and informal activities that happen within the current site, Chameleon aims to incorporate these qualities within the shophouse itself, transforming it into a micro-cosmos of various experiences. Situated at the corner of the shophouse row, it acts as a gateway to a revitalized back alley. The sunken ground of Chameleon draws users downwards into a flurry of activities before transporting them into the back alley behind that awaits their arrival.
