Abstract

"Komorebi" encapsulates the essence of an architectural marvel designed to enhance the creative journey of outdoor painters. Named after the Japanese term 'Komorebi,' which beautifully describes the interplay of light and shadow cast by sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees, this project reimagines the painter's interaction with nature. Situated in the serene landscapes of Kent Ridge Park, the shelter is a testament to the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic beauty, specifically tailored for the solitary artist.

The structure, primarily composed of wood and moulded plastic sheets sculpted to mimic leaf forms, not only integrates seamlessly into its natural surroundings but also serves a pivotal role in the artist's creative process. These sheets are treated with Mod Podge, a versatile substance ingeniously applied to regulate the translucency of the shelter's "leaves." This innovative feature allows for the manipulation of light and shadow within the shelter, casting a unique, ever-changing canvas upon which the painter can work. The shelter thus becomes more than a mere protective haven from the elements; it is a dynamic medium through which the artist can explore and be inspired by the distorted yet inherently natural play of light and shadow.

By partially shielding the artist from rain and sun, the shelter ensures comfort and uninterrupted productivity, offering a weatherproof haven that complements the artist's dedication. More significantly, "Komorebi" proposes a new lens through which the painter can perceive and interpret the natural world, fostering a space where creativity is ignited by the subtle beauty of nature's filtered light. This project, through its thoughtful design and sensitivity to the artist's experiential quality, stands as a beacon of innovation in the realm of artistic shelters, inviting painters to immerse themselves in a unique dialogue with the environment, thereby enriching their art and experience.
